Solent Stevedores Ltd was the preferred bidder in January 2008 for the contract to unload in excess of 1.2 million tonnes per annum of raw cane sugar at the Tate & Lyle Sugars raw sugar cane refinery at Silvertown, London.
Within the terms of this contract Solent Stevedores also provide the loading shovels and staff to feed the raw sugar from the storage shed 24 hours a day into the refinery.
The ship trimming machines for this operation are provided by Solent Stevedores and two portal cranes with hopper attachments and 26 tonne grabs are used for ship to shore discharge. There is an integrated belt system for moving the raw sugar from shore side to storage in the shed.
