Commodities Handled:
Animal Feed
Solent Stevedores has consistently handled in excess of 100,000 tonnes of animal feed per annum, imported through facilities at 108 Berth in the Western Docks.
Consignments range from small Coaster loads of 2,000-3,000 tonnes, up to Large Bulker cargoes in excess of 15,000 tonnes, discharged by crane and conveyor direct from ships hold to adjacent warehouses.
Fertilisers
In May 1995 ABP (owners of the Port of Southampton) opened a purpose built 10,000 m2 terminal to facilitate the storage and bagging of fertilisers destined for the UK farming industry.
Solent Stevedores is responsible for moving around 100,000 tonnes of fertiliser per annum from ship to shore primarily by quay cranes feeding a dedicated overhead conveyor.
Grain
Although cargoes of grain have been regularly handled through the Southampton bulk terminal, there has been a significant upsurge in export cargoes in recent times, with well over 200,000 tonnes expected to be handled in 2009.
The majority of tonnage is exported via a newly refurbished storage facility at 105 Berth.
Recycled Metal
A significant addition to the range of bulk terminal trades has been the introduction of re-cycled metal exports on behalf of SJ Norton & Co who have a substantial operation based in Liverpool. The Company required a deep water Port on the South coast to expand its UK business.
Having chosen the Port of Southampton, Norton’s entered into a long term deal with Solent Stevedores to develop facilities in and around the King George V Dock and 109 Berth with the intention of exporting in excess of 500,000 tonnes per annum using the two on-site high capacity harbour mobile cranes.
Recycled Glass
Solent Stevedores is responsible for loading crushed glass on behalf of Recresco. The base product comprising of household glass from around Hampshire and surrounding counties is delivered into Recresco’s dedicated facility. It is then crushed and loaded onto ships by a purpose built overhead conveyor before being despatched by ship to other parts of the UK and continental Europe to be re-cycled into new glass products.
Gypsum
Imports of gypsum rock have been a regular and high volume trade handled by Solent Stevedores in recent years. After discharging cargo from the ships hold to quayside storage, Solent Stevedores staff then reload the product direct to railway wagons positioned on the adjacent bulk terminal railhead.
Sugar
Solent Stevedores Ltd was the preferred bidder in January 2008 for the contract to unload in excess of 1.2 million tonnes per annum of raw cane sugar at the Tate & Lyle raw sugar cane refinery at Silvertown, London. Within the terms of this contract Solent Stevedores also provide the loading shovels and staff to feed the raw sugar from the storage shed 24 hours a day into the refinery.
The ship trimming machines for this operation are provided by Solent Stevedores and two portal cranes with hopper attachments and 26 tonne grabs are used for ship to shore discharge. There is an integrated belt system for moving the raw sugar from shore side to storage in the shed.

Other dry bulk commodities regularly handled by Solent Stevedores include Aggregates, Biomass, Marble, Mica, Peat, Salt, Soil and Wood Pulp
